In our society we tend to rely on others to make us happy. How other people are treating us determines if we are happy or not. Even the traffic has a say in our happiness, and not forgetting to mention the weather. Not only does this often make us sad, it also makes us very vulnerable.
We live in a world full of stress, and we always seem to push ourselves to achieve more with every passing day. Not only is this depleting our energy on a daily basis, it also disconnects us from our true inner being. To be able to be true to ourselves we need time to look within. Time to feel the connection to our soul, our being.
By being connected to our soul we can find true happiness – from within. This happiness is profound and very powerful. By being connected we can see the bigger picture, and somehow always manage to smile. No matter what comes our way.
The quickest and easiest way to connect to yourself is through meditation. Meditation can seem a bit scary to some. Maybe you are not ready to face what’s within, or you just don’t know how to start. Well, you can’t really do anything wrong.
Meditation is all about giving yourself some time. Time for contemplation. Time to get to know yourself. Meditation can be done by just being quiet – which is an amazing way to get to know your thoughts. What are you obsessing about? Where are you at in this moment in life?
Meditation can also be done by chanting mantras. My favourite mantra is The Gayatri Mantra. It is one of the oldest and most powerful mantras. It is believed that by chanting this mantra your life will be filled with happiness.
So here is what I suggest you do:
- Take a moment for yourself. (not even 10 minutes)
- Sit down on the floor – make yourself comfortable – but don’t lie down.
- Create a warm and loving atmosphere – maybe light some candles.
- Close your eyes.
- Take a few deep breaths.
- Listen to this amazingly beautiful song.
It is perfectly fine to start by just listening to the mantra. If all you do is give yourself some time – than that is a great first step. Then if you want to take it further and participate you will sense a deeper affect. So if you want to sing along (chant) and let the Universe hear your prayer, this is the mantra:
Om bhur bhuvaha svaha
Tat savitur varenyam
Bhargo devasya dhimahi
Dhiyo yonah prachodayat
The meaning of the mantra is:
“O thou existence Absolute, Creator of the three dimensions, we contemplate upon thy divine light. May He stimulate our intellect and bestow upon us true knowledge.”
Or simply,
“O Divine mother, our hearts are filled with darkness. Please make this darkness distant from us and promote illumination within us.”
